The Popularity of Traveller Whiskey
Buffalo Trace is at it yet again! We all know how bankruptcy-inducing it is to purchase a bottle from the Antique Collection or Pappy’s when each bottle can cost upwards of $1000 to $6,000+! But what has just been released from Buffalo Trace is anything but. In fact, it’s a bargain, a steal, an affordable collector’s item at only $38.95. So what’s with all the hype around a $40 bottle of whiskey?
The History
First of all, Buffalo Trace has a history as long as the U.S. has been around. Seriously. America - 1776. Buffalo Trace - 1775. Of course, the distiller was known as Old Copper Fire Distillery founded by pioneer Hancock Lee and it wasn’t until 1805 that the distillery was built and 1869 when E.H. Taylor Jr. got involved. In any case, Buffalo Trace is a name familiar to bourbon aficionados worldwide.
The Collaboration
Enter Chris Stapleton, the 8X Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter and Buffalo Trace master distiller Harlen Wheatley. Stapleton is known for his R&B-influenced cover of the classic country song “ Tennessee Whiskey” from his debut album Traveller; hence the name. As per usual when two talented craftspeople collaborate, it’s either a massive failure with no clear direction, a mediocrely middling effort, or a hugely resounding success. As far as we can tell The Traveller is very much the latter.
The Creation
Traveller stands as a blended whiskey, skillfully crafted through a blend of spirits sourced from various "award-winning distilleries" under the Sazerac company's ownership. Unlike the exclusivity of utilizing only Buffalo Trace-distilled whiskey, Traveller draws from a diverse range of sources, potentially including Buffalo Trace, A. Smith Bowman, Barton 1792, and international operations. Master Distiller Wheatley meticulously tested over 50 blends before selecting the refined Blend No. 40, the essence you'll find in each bottle. Notably, in contrast to the elusive nature of Pappy, Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, or W.L. Weller, Traveller distinguishes itself by being widely available and accessible without allocation constraints.
Here’s what the master distiller had to say regarding his concoction.
“In creating Traveller, we tried over 50 different recipes, experimenting, testing, and adjusting until we found a complex and approachable flavor profile worthy of the whiskey drinker who will enjoy it,” Wheatley said in a statement. “In the end, there was one clear winner—Blend No. 40—that everyone agreed was worthy to be Traveller Whiskey.”
The Result
Complexity takes center stage here. Experience intricate aromas of vanilla, matured fruit, and buttery shortbread, seamlessly complemented by nuances of caramel and a subtle oak touch. The palate unfolds with a delicate hint of sweetness, gracefully transitioning into layers of spice, toasted nut, and the rich essence of oak. The journey culminates in a robust finish, leaving a lasting impression of the whiskey's refined and harmonious flavor profile.
