Caymus Vineyards 50th Anniversary - Cabernet Sauvignon
Seemingly endless golden, brown grass lies dormant on the hills dotted with Quercus agrifolia, aka valley oak tree, which scorches under the bright, summer sky in the Mediterranean climate of Northern California, all whilst the verdantly green vineyards intertwine the landscape and beckon out a taste of their sweet, rich nectar - wine. Amongst the myriads of wineries, estates, and Californian chateaus that don the Napa and Sonoma Valley regions, Caymus Vineyards summons your olfactory epithelium and tastebuds henceforth!

The History

Caymus Vineyards, nestled in the heart of Napa Valley, California, was established in 1972 by the Wagner family. Led by patriarch Charlie Wagner, his wife Lorna Belle Glos Wagner, and their son Chuck, the family embarked on a journey to make exceptional wines. The vineyard gained fame with its first vintage in 1972 and has since become renowned for its rich, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, characterized by deep fruit flavors and smooth tannins. With over four decades of winemaking, Caymus Vineyards has maintained its commitment to quality and tradition, continuing to be a family-run operation that emphasizes meticulous vineyard practices and innovative winemaking techniques.

The Wines

Caymus Vineyards is located in the center of the Napa Valley. Primary production is Cabernet Sauvignon grown on low-fertility soils on both the valley floor and the mountains that surround the valley. Attention to viticulture details, some dry farming, high-density plantings (with some blocks spaced as close as meter x meter), thinning of the yield, along with healthy vines and harvesting at an elevated degree of ripeness – all of these elements produce a unique and singular style of Cabernet.

While the wine has sufficient tannins and structure for long-term bottle aging, Caymus Cabernet is dark and concentrated, with ripe, luxurious, fruit-driven softness that shows from the day of release. In addition, Caymus produces a smaller amount of Special Selection Cabernet. A limited bottling of Napa Valley Zinfandel honors winery co-founder Charlie Wagner Sr., for whom it was a favorite.

Fiftieth Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon

Celebrate half a century of winemaking excellence with the Caymus 50th Anniversary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2022. This landmark vintage marks 50 years since Chuck Wagner and his parents first ventured into the world of wine with their pioneering 1972 vintage. At that time, Napa Valley was just beginning to establish its reputation, with visionaries like Robert Mondavi foreseeing the potential for Napa Cabernet to achieve world-renowned status.

Chuck fondly recalls the early days of Caymus, starting with rudimentary equipment and generous support from neighboring vineyards like Inglenook and Beaulieu. From these humble beginnings, the Wagner family has maintained their deep-rooted passion for vineyard management and winemaking, keeping the operation intimately family-owned and operated. Today, Chuck works alongside his children, Charlie and Jenny, both skilled winemakers, continuing the legacy of crafting exquisite wines that are a testament to the family's dedication and the fertile grounds of Napa Valley.

The 2022 Caymus 50th Anniversary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon embodies the rich, smooth, and deeply satisfying qualities that have become synonymous with the Caymus name. This exceptional Cabernet is currently available for pre-order in single bottles, three packs, and six packs, and is expected to arrive in June. This release is not just a wine; it's a celebration of family, tradition, and the tireless pursuit of winemaking excellence.

Nothing to add to the many superlatives this vintage has already received except it was a real privilege!
